Welcome to the community of faith! Whether you are learning about Christianity for the first time or have already begun to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ, one of the most important parts of your faith journey is connecting with other Christians. One of the ways we celebrate that connection is Baptism.
What is Baptism?
Baptism is one of the sacraments of the church, a symbolic action that allows Christians to encounter the goodness of God. When someone is ready to formerly join the Christian community, they become baptised into the family of Jesus Christ.
What is Involved?
When you are ready to join the Church community following a conversation with the Minister, they will perform the baptism during a worship service. It will include reading out the profession of faith, asking questions, and performing the act of baptism with water. The minister pours water over the forehead, symbolizing the cleansing of our old life into new life with God.
Why Should I get Baptised?
Baptism is the rite of initiation into the Christian community. Jesus himself was baptised (Matthew 3:13-17) and as followers of Jesus, we are called to follow in his example. Jesus instructed his followers to: “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. (Matthew 28:19, NRSVUE) Baptism is the way in which we begin our new life with Jesus.
Can my Child get Baptised?
Baptism is for everyone, regardless of age. Whether you are a parent with an infant or a fully grown adult, Baptism is offered to all who seek Jesus. In the case of children, parents or sponsors take the Baptismal vows on their behalf, promising to raise and support them in their journey of faith.
What are Baptismal Vows?
When someone has their baptism, they are committing to joining the community of faith. During the service, the Minister will ask some questions to publically declare your commitment as a follower of Jesus. Questions are centered around your belief in God, your desire to love and seek justice, and your intention to share Jesus’ teachings through your words and actions.
